WATERTOWN, NY — Watertown residents will be joining thousands gathering in towns across the United States this fall to draw attention to the suicide prevention movement. The Watertown Out of the Darkness Walk, hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) – Greater Central New York Chapter, will be held on Sunday, October 10 at Thompson Park.
The walk will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with registration beginning at 10 a.m. For the safest and most streamlined event experience, participants are asked to pre-register at afsp.org/watertown.
“Suicide is a leading cause of death and it is preventable. As we all try to protect our mental health and cope with the impacts of the pandemic, it’s more important than ever that we can come together as a community and take steps to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide,” said Karen Heisig, AFSP Associate Area Director for the Greater Central New York Chapter. “At AFSP, we are dedicated to providing members of the Watertown and surrounding communities with opportunities to connect, heal, share stories, create impact, and show those who struggle that they are not alone.”
