Princella taught herself out of boredom. She started after one of her stressful exam periods, and she needed something that would help her relax and calm down. She passed the exam excellently. Princella studied with her iPad, and somewhere along the line, she downloaded procreate. It was by accident, and just playing around with it, she decided that she didn’t want to waste her $10. She was forced to try and play around with it, and then she saw a Pinterest tutorial on how to make these digital paintings. [3:37] From high school, most people know Princella as a poet. People from the university know her as a dancer. A few of her friends in high school knew that she could draw, but they didn’t pay attention to that because they knew her as a poet. Princella also doesn’t want to expose that part of her because she was shy, and she didn’t know how people would respond to it. Getting out of shyness [4:26] A friend stacked her out of it. She said Princella’s work is good, and she needs to get more people to see her work. So she created the account to store for herself. [5:00] Princella sees some qualities in different pictures and tries to merge them sometimes to get inspiration from her head. She always needs a reference. Princella loves her paintings to look as close to life as possible so that you can relate to them. She doesn’t want them to look like caricatures or something. A side business [5:38] She started out drawing for herself as a way to get rid of her stress. Then later on, people were like, “Oh, this is so nice. Can you do this for me?” “Oh, this is so nice. I want a picture of me.” And then it became into an art business that way. Then more people came in. They’re like, ‘Oh, I need a drawing for my business.” And it keeps going up. Now Princella has brands asking her to do some illustrations for them. What contributed to people trusting Princella’s work [6:59] One thing Princella learned was not to say yes to every offer that comes her way. She had to pick out the ones that aligned with the goals that she had for her business. You can get carried away with the money and every offer that comes but you had to learn that you need to take care of yourself. You need to stick to your goals and not lose yourself. The idea of what the goal is [8:06] One thing that Princella wanted to stick with her company was the representation. Most of the time, when you see black art, from her side of the country, it depicts women in this suffering, carrying the whole world in her shoulders kind of image. [9:38] For personal illustrations, just to overall make the client happy. Some people like to see digital versions of themselves. What kind of company would Princella choose if there were no boundaries? [10:26] Princella loves to travel, so she hopes for anything that wouldn’t restrict her from traveling a lot and caring about people and their mental well-being. Her job would have to center around empowering women, making them feel special, making them feel like they’re capable, they’re loved. She knows for a certain that being a freelance illustrator would give her all of these benefits. Incorporating art into medical [11:43] Princella still asks herself and prays about it because she doesn’t know how. [12:26] They haven’t broken into specialties yet. She’s still doing general medicine, so when she graduates, she will be a general practitioner. They have to decide afterward after she gets into practice and in the hospitals, working in various fields to figure out which one she wants. [12:56] Being a family doctor, you get an hour, and then you have the rest of the night or afternoon to yourself. In Ghana, you can decide what hours you want to work and then you have to read the data yourself. [14:01] The thing about medicine is you also need to see your patients, assess them physically. What question would you like to ask for the next interviewee? [15:07] What is one thing they would consider the true gifts or talents they have to offer to the world? What are you passionate about outside of what you’re doing? If you lost your voice, what else could you do that would still bring you fulfillment?
