Public Square bakery up for sale amid slow business climate

For the past 11 years, the owner of Europe Cakes has carefully created wedding cakes for patrons’ special day, Christmas cookies at the holidays and muffins and pastries all year round.

But Monica Atanasova has put the business on Public Square up for sale after she was offered and accepted a job with the culinary program at BOCES.

It was a job she could not pass up, she said.

“I’ve started my 12th year. I’ve made a lot of friends,” she said. “I think it’s a bittersweet decision.”

It’s the second longtime Public Square business making news in recent days. Owner Jamie Danielson will be closing Spokes on the Square at the end of the year.

Atanasova started her new job in November. Working full time at BOCES, she’s cut her bakery’s hours to 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. She has two employees.

Some of the other businesses on Public Square also are in flux.

Joseph Wessner, president of the Watertown Downtown Business Association, said he’s heard some Public Square businesses are going through rough times.

Businesses in the Paddock Arcade “are doing okay,” but others in other parts of the Square are not, he said.

“I just think it’s getting harder,” he said.
