Britain’s Oldest Soccer Senior at 90-years-old Is Still the ‘Ninja’ of Goals–Playing 3x a Week

Britain’s oldest striker is still banging in the goals for his local soccer team three times a week—at the grand old age of 90.

Sprightly Mike Fisher—nicknamed ‘Ninja’ by teammates—averages three goals a game following an amateur footballing career that began 75 years ago in 1949.

The former RAF veteran turns out every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for two local walking soccer teams after he started playing for them at age 82.

Before that, the granddad-of-two played up until his 40s before taking a break from the beautiful game.

Falling back in love with the sport in his 80s, he now regularly appears for Old Corinthians, who play at non-league Rushall Olympic’s ground in Walsall.

The goal machine even celebrated his 90th birthday with teammates in late February by bagging five goals in a game against opponents 40 years younger than him.

“They all call me ‘Ninja,’” Mike admits, “because they say I’m gone in the blink of an eye, just like that. One minute you think you’ve collared me and the next minute I’m gone and the ball is in the back of the net.”

A 100-year-old Second World War veteran has walked hundreds of miles around his garden to raise money for charity—but no, you didn’t stumble upon a four-year-old news story,

Lance Corporal Harold Jones laps his back garden 30 times every day no matter the weather, and has been doing so since 2020, as he was inspired by the worldwide media sensation of the late Captain Tom, who announced on social media he was doing the same thing in the early days of the pandemic in 2020.

Corporal Jones is a great-grandfather-of-six, and he started walking circuits around his bungalow during lockdown like Captain Tom, and has so far taken his walker a total of 661 miles, equating to 41,550 laps around his garden, or about the same distance as his home in Birmingham to the border of Germany.

“I always refer to myself as Lance Corporal Harold. Captain Tom was a captain so I thought I’d go to the other end of the spectrum,” said the centenarian, referring to the military hierarchy. “One other reason I started was to keep fit and keep moving. With Covid we had to stay in and all sorts of things.”

“I saw it was what Captain Tom had done to raise money. I had lost three friends with Motor Neurone Disease and I thought I’d do the same,”

As the anniversary of Captain Tom’s death approaches in two weeks’ time, Jones is still racking up the steps in honor of the Captain who touched the hearts of the nation.

Everett Kalin was looking for an adventure to celebrate his birthday. For a man of his age, that might entail going out to eat ethnic food, but the 93-year-old Californian had other plans.

“When you hit your 90s, you think, ‘What would be some things I’d like to do?’” he told SF Gate. “… I guess Half Dome was the thing that most popped into my mind.”

Half-Dome—the monumental mass of granite in Yosemite Valley is no place for faint hearts or knackered knees. For those with apposite fitness, it’s a 14-16 hour endeavor that involves gaining and then losing over 4,000 feet in elevation. Toward the top, cables embedded in the rocks require upper body strength to pull oneself up steep inclines.

Despite all that, Everett was determined, and requisitioned the company of his son Jon, 57, and granddaughter Sidney, 19, for the excursion.

Training hard, Everett made ample use of the days leading up to the trek to walk up and down stairs, and around Lake Merritt.

Then the day of the hike came, and Everett admits that he probably underestimated the difficulty of the beginning half, with plenty of steep paths that he described as slick.

Jon and Sidney helped him along every step of the way, even pushing on his backside during particularly vertical bits.

Adopting a healthier lifestyle can add years to your life—even in your 80s, according to new research from Japan.

Reducing drinking, not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, and increasing sleep produce the biggest gains, say scientists.

They increased longevity by six years in healthy 40-year-olds. The benefits were even more prominent in those twice the age.

These gains applied also to individuals with life-threatening illnesses, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney disease.

The study from Osaka University shows it is never too late to give up bad habits and shed the pounds, from middle age onwards. It was based on almost 50,000 people in Japan who were tracked for up to 20 years.

“This is a particularly important finding given the prevalence of chronic disease has increased globally,” said Senior author Professor Hiroyasu Iso.

The team says taking ownership of your health is key to a pleasurable retirement.

“Idioms and proverbs about the importance of maintaining good health span the ages. Many emphasize how closely health is tied to happiness and the opportunity to live a fulfilling and enjoyable life.”

The study, published in Age and Aging, found that healthy behaviors adopted over time have a marked effect on lifespan.
