Short-term rentals in north country gobbled up for eclipse weekend

If the lack of lodging is an indicator, there will be a lot of people coming to the north country to view the total solar eclipse on April 8.

Nationally, short-term rental website Airbnb reported a 1,000% increase in searches for bookings in the path of totality in the U.S., and the north country is no exception. Corey C. Fram, director of the Thousands Islands International Tourism Council, said that short-term rentals are a hot commodity for the weekend of the eclipse.

He’s seen a “spike” in rentals for those days and visitors are paying more money to stay in the region from April 6 to April 8.

“It just shows folks are definitely coming,” Fram said.

He wasn’t able to provide exact numbers on short-term rentals for that weekend, but available data indicates trends of an influx of visitors.

Short-term rentals for those three days exceed what the north country gets normally for weekday visits during the summer tourism season, he said. It already equals rentals for typical Memorial Day weekends.

There are still some Airbnb rentals available as of earlier this week, but you can expect to pay more than usual due to high demand for access to eclipse events.

According to Fram, the average daily rate for that weekend is $262, up from $188 for the same time last year.

Here’s a sampling of available short-term rentals as of March 12:

* $1,500 a night for a Adirondack House in Potsdam with four bedrooms;

* $1,354 a night for a Cape Cod house in Potsdam with three bedrooms;

* $1,350 a night for a house in Henderson that sleeps 14. It would cost $4,050 for the three nights.

* $950 a night for a house in Canton with five bedrooms;

* $727 for a house in Clayton with four bedrooms;

* $674 a night for private island in the town of Alexandria Bay with six bedrooms. It’s a discounted rate because of a sudden cancellation;

* $446 a night for a modular home with two bedrooms;

* $400 a night for an RV camper in Henderson;
